Hi,

did you reinstall your XP operating system recently? Or did it work before? You can take a look into the device manager ( "Windows" + "R" key and in the command line type the "devmgmt.msc") if there is any driver problem.
If yes, try reinstalling the driver. You can find it for example here:

If you want to find yout if your Sound is working at all and your hardware is ok, then download an Linux live cd, burn the iso on a blank disc an boot it. If you can hear any sounds at start, then it is most probably your Windows settings.

Changing back to XP means you will have to download sound card drivers for XP. These drivers are availble on Dell's website.
