Try turning off your computer (hold the power button for a few seconds untill the computer turns off) then restarting your computer. What I think happened was the update was running but was interrupted when you put the computer to sleep/hibernate by closing it. Restarting could possibly fix the computer.

Google Chrome never asks to be updated. It just does it automatically. Did you accidentally install malware instead?
