I have a grey rectangular box in the middle of my screen. It goes and comes back of its own accord. In the middle of the box is a a speaker sign in a yellow box with another rectangual box in red to the right of it. Above this red rectangle is the word Volume. To the right of the red rectangle is 0. PLEASE help as this is Soooooooo frustrating. Thanks Sandi

SOURCE: Large Black Box Showing up in middle of screen.

When a black box appears on the screen it means that your closed captions are on and set to TEXT. When the closed captions are set to CC1, it puts the words on the screen and when set to TEXT it puts a black box in the center of the screen. Go into the set's menu, navigate to the closed captions page and set the captions to OFF.

SOURCE: black box in middle of tv screen

This is a background for text, even though you aren't seeing any text at the time. Since it covers most of the screen, it sounds more like a demo mode screen than closed captioning. Go into your setup menu and make sure that neither of those is selected. If necessary, restore the factory settings. I'm assuming that this is coming from the tv itself, and that you don't have a VCR, Tivo, etc. Good luck!

Try to upgrade your drivers from here:

http://support.gateway.com/us/en/emac/product/default.aspx?tab=1&modelId=1299

Especaily for the sound card and the screen card.
It will do no harm to upgrade them all.
Select the newest one.

Hope this was helpfull.
