I pulled the starter on my 1997 softail heritage classic because it was only making a whirling sound and the pinion gear was not engaging the clutch gear. I put in a starter clutch kit put it back together (after placing a light film of grease on the face of the starter that mounts up to the back of the primary case. Put it back together and all I hear is a click from the solenoid as the spring pulls it back when I release the starter button. No starter spin as if the motor windings are not getting the 12 volts from the battery. I'm wondering if the starter lost it's grounding when I added the layer of grease - but I tried running a jumper cable from negative post of the batter to one of the screws on the starter case and no change. I did have trouble getting the starter clutch gear to seat back in the drive case - had to use the screws on the starter case to pull it back into place. Was hoping I wouldn't have to re-drain everything and pull it all apart again. Do you have any suggestions for trouble shooting the problem? Do you know if the starter ground is established by the metal to metal contact between the starter and the back of the primary case? Thanks for any help you can provide. jsblas2@netscape.net
