The top unscrews. grip the base and use palm of other hand to hold top and twist as in taking lid off a jar. Top unscrews and batteries are accessible. takes 3 AAA.

What a shame, I can't change the battery, so More plastic trash to pollute our environment. Why do manufacturer's do this? My arctic heat has run out of battery power and I can't open it and so I have to throw it away.
