I have a Sharp Scientific calculator EL-556D (it is old - have had it for years all through uni).  It has HEX on the screen and is not calculating correctly.  The screen is going faint too - could it just be a battery problem?

If it displays HEX, then it is doing calculations in hexadecimal numeration. If that is not what you want change the numeration mode to DECimal. As to its screen being  faint, then its battery may be depleted. I may be time to get a new calculator?
